Chester Races Style Guide

The May festival is the most prestigious meeting of Chester's flat season and represents the perfect opportunity to enjoy three frenetic days of enjoyment within the Roman walls. We have put together our gentleman's guide to racing in sartorial style.

With changeable weather always a possibility in the north of England, a versatile look is crucial; an image reliant on rain or shine is a risky strategy. Consequently, a mid grey or navy blue lounge suit in a light summer cloth fits the bill, articulating both the classical British tailored look without casting too corporate an image.

For summer racing on the flat, the look is smart. A simple lounge suit can be accessorised easily to add personality and individualism. When partnered with a white or fine pink stripe bespoke shirt, a woven silk tie and pocket chief the look is perfected. A tobacco suede dessert boot from Alfred Sargent is ideal footwear while a felt trilby from Lock & Co will make a further racing statement.

For a more contemporary, casual look, team a mid weight blue double breasted blazer, with a bespoke white cotton shirt and knitted tie. Summer chinos can be partnered with a tasseled suede loafer from Crocket & Jones and the whole vibe offset with a pocket square and lapel pin.
